Workshop Details

Growing mushrooms from logs is fun and easy, and something everyone can do in even the smallest yard or outdoor space. Come join us for this four-hour hands-on workshop, and go home with two freshly inoculated oyster/shiitake logs and wine cap sawdust spawn that should all start producing mushrooms six months to one year later!

Learn about:

  • How and when to source logs and what to look for (the logs we use in the workshop will already have been harvested but we will describe the process in detail)

  • Which species work best for oysters, shiitakes, and wine cap mushrooms

  • Where to source spawn and supplies easily and cost-effectively

  • Where and how to store logs after inoculation

Learn and get lots of hands-on experience with:

  • How to grow wine cap mushrooms in wood chips and mulch

  • How to safely drill holes in logs and the different types of tools to use (including safety equipment)

  • Inoculating the logs and what tools to use

  • Covering inoculated holes with wax to protect from infection

  • Label systems and methods for logs

What you'll go home with:

  • Handouts and instructions on growing both shiitake and oyster mushrooms from logs and wine caps from pegs into wood chips

  • Two freshly inoculated oyster or shiitake logs (each log about 4-6" in diameter and 3-4' long) that you can take home with you and start harvesting mushrooms from about six months later!

  • Wine cap mushroom sawdust spawn to take home and inoculate into a mulched area - these should start producing wine cap mushrooms about six months later

Workshop Cost

The cost of the workshop is $78/person, and each participant goes home with two freshly inoculated logs and two inoculated winecap pegs. Each oyster log will typically fruit in spring and fall for 2-4 years; each shiitake log will typically fruit in spring and fall for 4-8 years!

Refund policy: You can email us to cancel your registration. If you cancel your registration at least one week in advance, you will receive a full refund. Cancellations less than 7 days prior to the workshop are non-refundable.

Who is this workshop for?
